Okay..soooo...two trims in one week and one warm flat iron later the above results. In truth I am not liking my locks straight. I guess I've gotten used to my curls and waves and it seems really out of place and bothersome to me. I don't think I will be straightening again anytime soon. Two days later I went back to my normal. :-)

I got a sample of this as part of a Phyto Sephora VIP gift box featuring this product, and I must say I am very happy with it's moisturizing properties and i have been spritzing on my length with concentration on the ends when I braid out at night. I have been sealing with a mixture of Cameilla oil and Castor oil and so far so good. I've gotten up to four good days of braid outs with this method which is great! Can Take It No More!! Getting A Bonnet Dryer

I'm sitting here waiting for my wet hair to dry enough so I can venture outside with my fedora on to do some shopping and have Thai for dinner. As my hair is getting longer and fuller it takes longer and longer to dry. The winds are howling outside and what I should have done is bunned it and went on about my business.

So while I'm sitting here, I finally broke down and got myself a bonnet hair dryer. This one is a good price ($119.00) and it has an adjustable stand which means I don't have to try to find a tabletop that is the right height and drag a chair to it. I can move it where I please! I also got my hair steamer from the same company last year and was very happy with the delivery time, free shipping and quality of the steamer. I'm working on balancing my porisity levels, moisture and strengthing routines as I saw some breakage last year around this time for not paying attention to it.

I'm also adding Roux Porosity Control Conditioner into the mix as I hear this is great for keeping hair at the proper Ph level of around 4.5. to add strength.

Hair Updates and New Products - 11.20.10

I did my monthly henna treatment today and I think I just might have nailed down a routine (finally) on how to do it with consistent results. I'm mixing about 6 tablespoons of henna with a strong tea of various things such as horsetail herbs, green tea, marshmallow root and let color develop over night. I added around a tablespoon and a half of rosemary infused avacado oil right before applying.

To minimize the dryness that can result from henna use, I'm only painting the roots and scalp with a color brush the full strength mixture, then I mix the remaining 2 tablespoons into a thick deep conditioner to be applied to the rest of the hair. I plastic cap and sit under my heat cap for 2 hours or so and then 2 without heat, rinse in tub, co-wash in shower with Aussie Moist and I'm done!

I tried out some new products this time around - Aveda's Be Curly and Kinky Curly's Knot today. I put in Kinky Curly first and then Be Curly over it. Not sure I like both together so I will have to try them alone. I will say that Be Curly does what it says. I did notice more curl definition and curl in general as my hair dried.

Product Review: Say Yes To Yes To Carrots!

I have a new favorite leave-in with Yes To Carrots. I had been eyeing this one for a little while and have read extremely positive reviews on it, so I made a mental note to pick on up to go on rotation as I cleaned up/finished my existing bottles.

First off I love the smell. It is floral yet slightly nutty if that makes any sense. lol! I do find it to be "uplifting" in an aromatherapy sense I guess you could say.

It dries with no residue and a great shine and softness. I have been just using this as my leave in and not topping with JessiCurl as I have done in the past. After it is completely dry I might scrunch through a teaspoon of organic coconut oil for additional shine, but that's it. I've gotten up to day 3 hair with this method which is great. Since my hair is getting longer by the day, I am looking at ways to stretch my days out as much as possible.

I'm going to do a roller set the second week of November and try to go with that a week and see how that works out with helping to combat the "winter dryness" I am not looking forward to dealing with. Grrrr!

Henna Treatment 09.21.10

I FINALLY did a Henna treatment after slacking off for over two months and boy was it needed. For me, I think my Henna treatments are a key element in nourishing my scalp, hair roots, adding shine and definition and growth to my hair.
I mixed up my Henna the night before with a hearty tea of various moisturizing and strengthing teas and let it color develop overnight.

The next morning I added about 2 or 3 tablespoons of fenugreek seed infused avocado oil to the mixture and applied to the roots first with a color application brush. After that I added JessieCurl Deep Moisturing Condish Pack to the remainder of the Henna and applied that to the length of my hair. With my hair stretched out with the Henna application on it I see that it is easily 2 inches or so below my shoulders. So even with the trims it has grown quite a bit since I big chopped in 6/09.

After plastic capping and sitting under my heat cap for 45 mins (left the Henna pack on for a total of 4 hours)

Filled the tub with warm water and dunked my head to remove most of the Henna and applied a cheapie condish (VO5) and hopped in the shower, after rinsing and cleaning the tub out, to co-wash a few times to remove any left overs.I applied Aussie Moist as my leave-in and had a great hair day today!! Shiny, soft, frizz-free, defined curls!

Product Review - Pantene Curly Hair Series Deep Moisturising Treatment

I've been pretty much sticking to my regulars when I do my deep condishes, I've been slacking off a bit as of late, I'll admit, but have made a commitment to do once a week from now through September. It appears that in it's natural state I get a good amount of growth during the summer months. This is only my second natural summer, though, so we will have to see. I took a look at my deep condish arsenal and saw that it was time to do a re-stock. Pantene has always had pretty good condtioners and shampoos, and I have used them off and on through the years while my hair was relaxed. What caught my attention with this paticular formula is that is specifically has been formulated for Curly Hair. At around $7.00US I decided to pick one up and try it out.
Most definitely a keeper!! Creamy without feeling overly heavy on the hair, lightly floral in scent with a slight undertone of coconuts, it goes on smooth and easily distributes through the hair. I bagged and tagged my hair (Beanie speak for plastic cap and scarf, LOL!) overnight after doing about 30 mins. under the heat cap and rinsed out the next morning. Rinsed out clean to moisturized, smooth, silky and defined tresses.
I am wondering how this stuff might work as a leave in mixed with say HH Hello Hydration? Will have to see. This is one of a new series released just this May and I will be sure to pick up a bottle of their Light Conditioning Detangler, as it gets high marks across the board too according to other websites.
Definitely recommend this one and it goes along side the Neautrogena Deep Treatment as one of my staple low priced Deep Condishes.

I've had a jar of Fantasia IC Hair Polisher Styling Gel sitting in my closet for a few months now. I've never really tried it because I've always used my conditioner for leave in. One thing I've always hated is the fly aways and the sometimes degree of shrinkage I would get with the conditioners as leave ins. So I decided to try something new the other day. To completely rinse out the conditioner and then rake through my hair some of the gel, shower cap and then blot ends with t-shirt after getting dressed. First off, extreme definition and SHINE!
I left it alone until it it was mostly dry and then I broke up a few of the clumped curls on my ends. Also, the first day the shrinkage was greatly reduced while drying. Second day has a bit more, but still great definition, shiny the works. I spritzed a little water on my edges and put a little gel to smooth them down and it worked like magic.
The biggest thing for me is the great result on eradicating those ugly frizzies and fly aways! Although I probably will still use my trusty conditioner as leave in regularly, I will definitely be giving air time to the gel.

Yeah..it's been a little bit since I posted...working on an animated short right now under my avatar name for the World Expo in Shanghai, China, so been a bit busy with filming that in Second Life. Now...the hairs...all I can say it THANK GOD IT"S SPRINGGGGG! I can definitely tell a huge difference in my hair moisture in the past two weeks. I was joking with my cousin Rob over at Luvbenet's Coily World that our hair moisture returning is going the be the way we mark the coming of Spring every year from now on! LOL! As far as a hair cut..I kept putting it off and putting it off until I finally just pulled it back in a pony tail in the shower with conditioner in it and cut off a half inch in the back. It needed it..I also ended up trimming a bit off each curl on the sides to make sure I got some of the ends off on the sides.

I've been washing and going every day this week except today. I'm going to do a deep condish with a mixture of deep conditioners I have little bits left of and sleep in tonight. It's suppose to be in the low 80s for the next couple of days and then get cooler again after that.
Update hair photos! First one is before trim second one is after trim. I can't tell you how glad I am summer is here!

Product Review: Tigi Moisture Maniac Conditioner

I decided to pick this conditioner up after reading the ingredients on-line and noting it had one of my hair's favorites, Behentrimonium Methosulfate. It definitely delivered in all departments. It literally MELTS any tangles and knots from your hair on contact and give a huge dose of moisture to your tresses. Massive conditioning power. I didn't need to use a large amount, either, which is good because the bottle is on the small side. Brilliant pina colada fragrance. I swear it's THE best smelling condish I've had on my hair in a long time! I used it as a leave in and topped with a dollop of my JessiCurl Weekly Deep Conditioner and the result is soft, shiny, delicious smelling, defined, smooth curls! It is kinda pricey for the amount you get, though. I bought the 8.5 oz bottle from my local Stop and Shop for about $14.00. I found it here on Amazon in an 25.36 oz size for $16.36 and it has free super saver shipping!! I bought 3 bottles to stock up as I know this is going into heavy rotation in my hair conditioner arsenal.

Besides the apprehension about my upcoming hair trim, I am pleased overall at the progress I've made from my self inflicted BC in 4/09, to the one I had in the salon on 6/09 to now 02/10. I've not had any form of heat on my curly locks. I'm really not all that anxious to straighten my hair as some parts are barely wavy and I am extremely worried that the curl will not come back. Although I have specific goals for my hair, I'm really enjoying my hair journey and enjoying all the stages and learning process. I've sold some of my hair tea bags from my Etsy shop and my next goal is to add an oil and a deep condish to the the inventory (working on formulations). :-)

As I mentioned before, this length and cut on Alicia Keys is what I'm looking at as a hair style goal.

This was my hair relaxed and long. It was mid back in length and I mostly wore it in two pig tails. LOL!

Product Review: Aveeno Nourish + Moisturize Conditioner

I'd been seeing references both on line and on the beauty blogs I read about Aveeno Nourish + Moisturize conditioner. I've used Aveeno products in the past and my current face wash is even the gentle oatmeal liquid cleanser from their baby line. I made a mental note to pick up a bottle after looking on line at the ingredients. The third ingredient is Behentrimonium Methosulfate - Naturally derived, but not all natural. It emulsifies and thickens the conditioner. Also aids in static control and comb ability. This is what makes the conditioner creamy and detangling. Behentrimonium methosulfate is the mildest hair-detangling ingredient available. It is made from non-genetically modified rapeseed oil. This scientifically sophisticated ingredient is renowned for its superior detangling ability, without causing build-up on the hair.

Since my other favorite atm condish - HE Hello Hydration and has the cheaper version behentrimonium chloride ingredient, I was expecting it to be thicker and creamer. The consistency is liquidy and the scent is pretty much non-existent. I smoothed it on my hair passed my head under the shower quickly and "lathered" to emulsify, shower capped it and finished my shower. I blot it dry with either a t-shirt or one of my curl cloths and seal with my Jessiecurl Deep Conditioner. Results in the photo. I like the conditioner as it does create great curl definition and smooths frizz.

I've styled today by raking hair back with my fingers while wet and securing with a cute Goody double headband.

Product Review: Anita Grant's Chocolate Banana Rhassoul Deep Condish Spa Mud and MORE!!

I finally got around to using some of my Anita Grant product haul! I mixed the spa mud with hot coconut milk-broke up the blocks and stirred until it was melted chocolate consistency. Rhassoul Deep Condish Spa Mud contains Unrefined Black Cocoa Butter & natural Soya based Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) which helps to guard scalp & hair from free radical damage. When hot liquid is added to our Rhassoul Deep Condishes, it swells & increases its surface area like a highly porous sponge. I washed my hair before hand with their Babassu Amla Shampoo Bar. It lathers fantastically and rinses out clean. I applied the mud to damp hair and plastic capped it for about 2 hours.

After I rinsed and detangled with

HE Hello Hydration, then put a little more back in for leave in. I could definitely tell the difference in the shower even with the moisture, elasticity and smoothness after rinsing out.

I combed into two braids and twirled the ends around my finger and tied a silk scarf over it for sleeping. The next day I undid the braids and hand-styled. I must say I was very pleased with the results and my hair is FINALLY happy and moisture filled!...And it is still wonderfully soft and moisturized 12 hours later!

Tonight I added a little Natural Coconut Rosewood Dry Oil, combed through with my fingers and re-braided.

I added moisture to my ends with JessieCurl Deep Conditioner (my hair hates as a deep condish, loves as a leave-in, go figure), twirled the ends and silk scarfed it. I am going to see how long my hair will hold up with this nightly routine before I have to co-wash.

I ordered the 3-30 gram cubes to try it out, but next time I will order several of the large 940 gram blocks to be sure I have on hand. I'm thinking next time I henna I will do half infused tea and half coconut milk. I'm sure the coconut milk had more than a little to do with my great results so I am anxious to try it again with other ingredients.

After packing my hair with the spa mud, I also did a facial mask with the sample of Organic Dark Chocolate & Banana Smoothie Face Mask (which came in a little baggie in powder form). I added a little bit of the left over coconut milk to the bag and smooshed it till creamy and smoothed over a freshly washed face. Ohhhh...the smell was heavenly and the softness after I rinsed it off..I couldn't stop touching my face! I have the rest in the fridge and hope to get 2 more facials out of sample.

UPDATE!: Well...is strange...my hair LOOKS good with no frizz and even has some shiny to it, but feels dry! After it dried I did scrunch it like the directions said to soften and yes that did help, but still felt weirdly dry to me. I also did my regular leave in of Tresemme and topped the styling treatment with my usual Aloe Butter. For the first time the aloe butter left a barely visible white film on the surface of my hair on one side which leaves me to deduct this product does not play well with others and must be used either alone or with the other products in this line. That being said, I will give this another shot, using it on it's own, as it did terminate frizz on contact and dried with well defined curls. This definitely could be great for when it gets hot and humid and I don't happen to want big hair on that day! LOL!

My results:
Okay..I like it?..........Maybe? I bought the 2oz. travel size to try it out first before investing in a larger size. The smell in heinous! Think RAID bug spray!! Fortunately it appears to dissapate after applying. I swear I almost didn't put it on my hair the smell was so strong. I'll tell you one thing, though. The minute I applied this to my head the frizz went bye-bye. Strange think is, after applying, my hair started to drip water from the ends of my curls when I had already scruched/blotted i dry. I'm guessing it's some form of delivery to the hair in the product. I continued to drip water (clear water) for a bit, too. It does define the curl and erradicate frizz, so I will invest in the larger size next time and do one more test to see how it comes out. Also appears to help with shrinkage factor.

Leopard print never goes out of style and can add a dose of chic uniqueness to any look when done correctly. A key point is to keep your leopard to a minimum. You don't want to look like a Times Square hooker from the 80s. LOL! The pricing on this look can also range from the reasonable to the rediculous.
I added two outerwear pieces in leopard to my wardrobe recently. One for now and one for when the weather gets warmer.

I found this cute, extremely soft and very well made and faux fur bolero at Forever21 on sale after Christmas for $20.00. It fits really well and will look great with skinny jeans and a t-shirt or dressed up with my black leather skirt and a black sweater.

Hair Trim Strategies...

I'm definitely on deck for a trim and shaping of my curls. It is growing like mad and I can see longer strands and overall uneveness on the ends which leads to less clumping of the curl and frizziness. I'm also seeing some "strand chaffing and/or halo" which means breakage is happening somewhere along the shaft of the hair.

I am still at odds on what approach I should take for this task. The way I see it my options ad concerns are the following:

1-Go to Salon DelaCruz in NYC and get a cut. Concerns: Getting too much cut off by an over zealous cutter I've never worked with before and getting bad, uneven cut.

2-Wash, condish, rinse out, leave a light leave in and wrap it backand tie with a satin scarf in a ponytail until dry. It will be wavy after it dries. Then lightly flat iron with a very warm iron, go to my old hair stylist and have her do a trim straight. Concerns: Not really any. I do want to keep the tri-level cut I currently have and she can follow the line of my current shape with a trim.

3-Wash, Condish, leave in a small amount of condish and braid into four braids on top layer of hair and 4 braids on bottom layer of hair. Seal he ends and clip off 1/4 of an inch off of each braid myself.

I'm looking at the second week in February and will schedule my cut in accordance with the Morrocco Method Chart.

I'm interested in what the readers out there have to say about the options I've listed and any advice/opinions you have on them. Also share your own experiences in the comments!! Thanks!!

OMG!! Is it cold out or what?! I find myself wishing for a 90+ degree NJ summer day at this point, and that is not good. I had to resort to drastic hair protection measures because my hair HATES the cold and retaliates with frizzy, dryness and stiffness! I have completely ceased going outside at all with wet or damp hair as well as making sure it's covered with my big trapper fur hat to keep the cold and wind completely blocked!

I found this cute, warm and inexpensive one on-line at Fur Hat World.com and I get loads of compliments when I wear it. I thought it looked kinda crazy at first, but I'm feeling it now. LOL! Another great thing is the inside of the hat is lined by a satiny quilt material and had a generous fur edging along the bottom inside the hat, so no friction to your tresses!!

Whatever option you choose to protect your delicate tresses and all your hard work; make sure you cover that head! Be wary of wool hats and other friction making fabrics which will cause breakage. If you do have a wool cap or beret, make sure it is lined with a satiny material!

Hot Mess Hair In The COLD!

Whewww! My hair was gonna go on strike soon if I didn't give it some TLC immediately! My scheduled Henna/Alma treatment didn't happen. I was feeling crappy with a cold, not to mention the single digit temputures and the howling winds outside the past few days (and into the week and coming weekend, I hear). I have not co-washed and detangled since New Year's Eve and my hair has rewarded me by becoming a dry, matted, hot mess! So today after a through wetting, I packed on the Herbal Essence - Hello Hydration conditioner and detangled. Luck for me, my hair detangles pretty easily once wet and has condish on, so it took not time to comb through.

It is far too cold to expose my wet tresses to this extreme cold air, and since I have to go out, I opted for a moisturising deep conditioner bake overnight and rinse in the morning. I reached for the Aubrey's Rosa Mosqueta Conditioner. Rosa mosqueta is rose hip by any other name. Whatever, you want to call it, the seeds are high in (fatty) linoleic and linolenic acids as well as Vitamin C, all of which are essential for the health of the hair and skin. Flavonoids, a ketonic compound (namely 3-pentenpropyl-kentoe) and trans-rhodanic acids have been detected. In fact, rosehip seeds are about 77% fatty acids. This should put my stressed out tresses back to a normal state!

Preview looks hot with the right amount of comedy (he is Will Smith's kid after all..LOL!) I loved both the first and second original Karate Kid movies (the rest..not so much). Product Review: Macadamia Oil Deep Repair Mask

I picked this jar of deep condish up and since I've not ever come across a deep condish with Macadamia in it, decided to give it a whirl. Macadamia Oil Deep Repair Mask is actually a combination of macadamia oil and argan oil along with tea tree oil, chamomile oil, aloe and algae extracts. It is said to rejuvenate and rebuild the hair, leaving the hair deeply nourished for improved elasticity and shine with long-lasting conditioning benefits. I applied and did the usual routine of 30 mins of steam and plastic capped it for the night to marinate and seal in all the goodness.

Result: I LOVE this conditioner! It really gets the job done without beening greasy or heavy on the hair. I definitely will purchase this one again. Photo of Styling results below!

2010 Hair Plan

Over the last few weeks I've been thinking about my hair goals for 2010 and roughly putting together an outline. I had my big chop on June 20th of 2009, plus I did two end clippings of my curls. I want to get another salon cut in the first quarter of the year (probably February) but I'm in a quandry on if I should get a curl cut or get it cut straight. I've not put heat on my hair at all in 2009. Recently I've seen on other curly hair sites photos of what incorrectly straightening your natural hair can do to your curls. My hair has some straight parts, wavy parts, curly parts and frizzy parts so product plays a big part in making it all come together as much as possible. Another issue I need to take a good hard look at and try to minimize are the dreaded "fairy knots". Those little hair strand destroying knots that cause breakage if left unattended. As my hair gets longer I'm starting to see these cropping up. Deep conditioning and sealing with my aloe butter helps some, but I want to try to do more to address this.
I had my big chop done at Devachan and although he did an okay job with the cut, the styling job was a hot mess so I don't think I will be going back. A salon called Salon Santa Cruz was recommended by Wes over at Honey.Brown.Sugar. I'm thinking of giving them a try. I'm looking forward to the continued discovery journey of what works and what doesn't work for my hair. I do know that it's healthier than it's been in years. I'm starting to narrow down what products work for my hair type and what doesn't. The hair steamer was a good investment and definitely helps with the dryness my tresses tend toward. I'm definitely going to continue with my Henna/Alma treatment every 3-4 weeks, as well as deep condish once or twice a week.
I'm still on the fence about any heat styling in 2010, so I will have to do a bit more reasearch and talk to a few people to see if I want to do it. I might try a roller set and go under the hair dryer and see how that works. Anyone who might have so feedback on heat styling experiences, please do email me so we can chat!

My hair is very strange with oils. It mostly hates it, but the lighter, more penetrating ones, i.e., Camellia and Cranberry seem to deliver consistent results. I sometimes like to finish with a light scrunching of my curls with a teaspoon of one of these light oils once it is completely dry and to add additional shine and softness. One thing I do hate is putting the oil on my hands! So I put on my thinking cap and remembered this Misto oil atomizer! I picked up a bottle of Taliah Waajid's conditioner toward the end of the summer and put it in the closet and forgot about it. Since the weather is major nasty outside today (rainy and now snowing - but not sticking...yet) I decided to do my henna gloss today. After I did my co-washing after rinsing out the henna glossing mixture I saturated my tresses with the Enhancing Herbal Conditioner. Devachan Conditioner Leave In Results...

Well...hummm...there are pros and cons to my rotation leave in results with the return to Devachan. It did give me some insight on where to go next with this whole experiment, though.
PROS: Eradicates FRIZZ!! I mean...NONE on my canopy (top layer of hair) where I always have some. Smells good.
CONS: Consistency similar to watered down elmer's glue and does not spread through hair easily. Had to re-wet hair (and i apply my leave-ins in the shower) to distribute. Dries with a harder "set" than I'm used to. I like my curls touchable and even thought they looked good and had a really defined curl pattern, was kinda eggh to touch for me. Gave more shrinkage than I'm used to seeing.
Soooo...I've decided to take a two step approach. First attempt will be to mix Devachan with Aubrey's Honeysuckle Rose (1 tablespoon of Devachan to 2 tablespoons of AHR) and see how that works. If that doesn't work, I will put Devachan just on the canopy and AHR everywhere else.). Will post results tomorrow on first run!

Health & Nutrition: Risotto With Winter Squash and Collard Greens

As the cold and dreary winter weather sets in, I crave hot and satisfying comfort foods like soups and baked cassaroles. I'm planning to try this yummy recipe on Sunday with chicken in it. It's healthy and seasonally appropriate!
Collard greens and roasted winter squash are very compatible in this nutritious and rich-tasting risotto. The squash, an excellent source of vitamin A, is sweet and tender, while the collards are earthy, with a slightly chewy texture.

1/2 pounds winter squash, such as butternut, banana or hubbard, peeled, seeded and cut in 1/2 inch dice (about 2 cups diced squash)

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
1 bunch collard greens, about 1 pound, stemmed and washed
2 quarts chicken or vegetable stock, or 1 quart chicken or vegetable broth and 1 quart water
1 small or 1/2 medium onion
2 large garlic cloves, green shoots removed, minced
1 1/2 cups arborio or carnaroli rice
1/2 cup dry white wine, such as pinot grigio or sauvignon blanced
Pinch of saffron (optional)
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese (2 ounces)
3 to 4 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley

1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Cover a baking sheet with foil. Toss the squash with 1 tablespoon of the olive oil, season with salt and pepper, and spread on the baking sheet in an even layer. Place in the oven, and roast for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes until tender and caramelized. Remove from the heat.

2. While the squash is roasting, blanch the collard greens. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Fill a bowl with ice water. When the water comes to a boil, salt generously and add the collard greens. Blanch for four minutes and transfer to the ice water with a slotted spoon or skimmer. Drain and squeeze out extra water. Chop coarsely, or cut in ribbons.

3. Bring the stock to a simmer in a saucepan. Heat the remaining oil over medium heat in a large, heavy nonstick frying pan or a wide saucepan, and add the onion. Cook, stirring, until the onion begins to soften, about three minutes, and add the garlic and about 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cook, stirring, until the onion is tender and the garlic fragrant, about one minute, and add the rice. Cook, stirring, until the grains of rice are separate.

4. Stir in the wine, and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. The wine should bubble but not too quickly. When the wine has just about evaporated, add the collard greens, a third of the squash and the saffron. Stir in a ladleful or two of the simmering stock, enough to just cover the rice. The stock should bubble slowly. Cook, stirring often, until it is just about absorbed. Add another ladleful of the stock, and continue to cook in this fashion -- not too fast and not too slowly, adding more stock when the rice is almost dry -- until the rice is tender all the way through but still chewy, 20 to 25 minutes. Taste and adjust seasonings.

5. Add the remaining roasted squash and another 1/2 cup of stock to the rice. Stir in the Parmesan and parsley, and remove from the heat. Add freshly ground pepper, taste one last time and adjust salt. The mixture should be creamy (add more stock if it is not). Serve right away in wide soup bowls or on plates, spreading the risotto in a thin layer rather than a mound.

Yield: Serves six.

Advance preparation: You can roast the squash and blanch the collards up to three days ahead. You can get ahead on the risotto, cooking it halfway through step 4, about 10 to 15 minutes, then spreading the rice out in the pan or on a baking sheet. Reheat and proceed with the recipe shortly before serving.

Time To Rotate Leave Ins....

I'm convinced my Tresemme Moisture Rich conditioner is not preforming up to par any longer, so it's time to rotate it out for a bit. Today I used what was left in my bottle of Aubrey's Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner (about 1/4 full) and poured in some Evian water, shook and used it as my leave in today and I was quite pleased with the moisture retention and curl definition aftr it dried. I also bought a bottle of DevaChan One conditioner today to use as my leave in. I have used this in the past (beginning of the year) with good results, plus it smells fantastic! So hopefully I will have good results again! Planning a Henna glossing this weekend!

I did a deep condish last night with Biolage by Matrix Ultra-Hydrating Conditioning Balm and I didn't like it as much as the Delicate Care Conditioner. In fact, my hair is a little dry today..not sure if this is from the conditioner or if it's just time to rotate my leave it from Tresseme to something else for a bit. Will have to play around with it. I mixed in my Camellia oil, aloe gel and honey in a dish and squirted the entire tube of condish in and mixed it. Steamed for 30 mins and capped, rinsed this morning. It felt strong and smooth after rinsing, but when it air dried completely...a little dry....I think I should increase the humidifer in my bedroom. LOL!

Product Review: Tresemme' Flawless Curls Conditioner

Yesterday I noticed I was getting to the bottom of the bottle with my regular leave-in/co-wash,the Tresemme' Moisturing version, so I made a mental note to pick up a bottle while out. Just as I was reaching for my usually bottle, I saw the flawless curl version out of the corner of my eye and went...hmmmm...LOL! I decided to give this version a try and I must say I do like it. While it provides the same moisture and extreme slip the other version does, it also appears to define ringlets better and dries with even less frizz than my orginal version, so it will definitely be put on the shelf. It also appears to have some "extra added ingredient" that adds a bit of extra "holding power." the first time I used it, dried a tiny bit hard...I think I put too much. I spied a this brand while in a Rite Aid and picked one up, even though the last thing I needed was another conditioner! LOL! I usually will do the "sniff test" before buying and this one smells lovely with citrisy goodness. I normally use it as the last co-wash after a henna treatment as it is thick and clings to my strands and the silk protein adds moisture. I have since then gone through two bottles of the stuff and definitely will say it has found a home in rotation as a co-wash. Today's Hair 11.18.2009 - What's The Tea?

In my quest to end my daily co-washing I've been trying out a number of different next day sprays and sealants to accomplish both great looking hair and at least a 3 day stretch of minimal manipulation.

Since I did a steam on Monday night with The Neautrogena Deep Moisture Mask, I had a "fresh curl" yesterday. Today I'm on my second day hair and I think it looks pretty good. I decided to make a tea of alma and fenugreek and put it in a spray bottle to spritz my hair with in hopes it would accomplish two things. Minimize frizz and refresh the curl...so far so good! I also seal with my Aloe Butter. I might play around with the ingredients a bit, but I think I might have a winner here!

I know I'm not the only one who was loving Ms. Fenty's Prada fur-trimmed sweater dress, but cannot and will not pay the $2,220.00US price tag attached to it! I'm making (or having made for me, I should say) my OWN version for around $200.00US to wear on my birthday this month.

My first task was to find a suitable sweater dress at a reasonable price and after a bit of searching I ended up at White House/Black Market. I wanted long sleeves on my version, and I love the bell shaped sleeve shape. Plus this sweater dress is a comfortable silk blend and has only 10% wool which means no itcy and a nice fit to it.

Sometime back while search on-line for some suitable crystal buttons in an attempt to replace the one a local dry cleaners ruined on my Marc Jacobs sweater ( along with my cashmere Juicy hoodie) *side eye from H E L L to them...you know who you are* I found 3 inch wide, fox fur sold "by-the-yard" on M & J Trimming and bookmarked it knowing some day I would have the desire to have this sewn on SOMETHING..LOL! Lo and behold, my foresight was not in vain! I selected the snowtop version/color...white fox subtly tipped in black for contrast and blend with the black dress.

I'll be turning heads paired with some short boots or maybe classic pumps and patterned black stockings. (won't forget my ear rocks and lipgloss ala' Ms. Fenty)

Today's Hair - Results Of Yesterday's Henna!!

Results of yesterday's Henna pack. I made it a bit more liquid than usual because I read somewhere that it will apply easier to the roots....true..but the dripping in my face was driving me insane the entire time...even after I put the plastic cap on after steaming..I had to keep a paper towel handy to wipe the random drips running from my ear area. Next time I will make a bit thicker (like I have in the past) to get rid of this issue. Well, it's all about experimentation...especially where Henna is concerned. The exact right alchemy varies from person to person....but Henna is definitely an excellent addition to anyone who is interested in strong hair and chemical free color. I co-washed this morning as I did still feel some residue, and it is soft, defined and smooth today. I will probably steam with 30 mins of deep condish with Neautrogena's Triple Moisture Mask, plastic cap it and sleep in it tonight or tomorrow, depending how I feel later on.

Time For Some Henna!!

I've been using BAQ (Body Art Quality) Black African Henna from Mehandi.com for about 4 months now. Even though Henna is kinda drying to me to use straight up, I find it does a bang up job mixed with other things to curb the drying effects, boost moisture and shine. I will typically mix in Amla (to retain and refresh curl pattern), Indigo (to cool the intensity of the red to a dark auburn color), Camellia oil and sometimes Honey.

I will steam for an hour with the Henna pack on my head, plastic cap it and putter around the house cleaning and doing laundry for another 3 or 4 hours and rinse out. I mixed up a pack on Thursday evening, cover and let it sit on the stove until early Saturday morning when I apply. I'm infusing my Camellia oil with fenugreek, amla and hibiscus flowers and I will add 4 or 5 tablespoons of the mixture to the Henna, along with the Amla/Indigo mix I make and put in right before I apply the mixture.

I will probably deep condish after as well.

Sometimes I will deep condish the following day so I can make sure I have gotten out all the henna and to determine dryness level. Will post after treament pics!! I'm really loving the color it gives also...wonderfully highlighted hair without the trip to the hair dresser, chemicals or hundreds of dollars!!

One of my favorites is Emily Ryan, who designs and even makes custom items (you send her your bust, waist and hips measurements for this dress) for her patrons. Today's Hair - 11-11-2009 - Emergency Steam Deep Condish!!

Well, my Elasta QP DPR-11 with hot cap treatment and overnight DID NOT last a day! My hair was hella dry again last night! I think my hair must be getting spoiled with me giving the steam treatments..*side eye to my hair* LOL! I pulled out the Aubrey's Honeysuckle Rose, the last of the Matrix Biolage and about 4 tablespoons of my trusty Camellia oil, mixed that up and slapped it on, steamed 45 minutes and plastic capped it for the night. NOW! I have some long lasting moisture in my tresses! It's soft, frizz free, defined.

I think I will have to get like 5 bottles of Aubrey's next time I hit the health food store. Even though it's hard to get out of the bottle and looks like it's too heavy for my finicky hair, it does the job without leaving my hair coated and feeling heavy. Yay!

Hair is Dry, Dry, Dry Today!!

Dunno if it's the warming of the weather or because I've not slept under my humidifier in about 3 days, but I didn't co-wash today, just added a spritz of Jane Carter's moisturizing leave-in spray and a scrunch with my creamy Aloe butter. At first it was okay for about 6/7 hours. As the evening wore on, it started to feel drier and drier. :-(. I decided to pull out the heavy duty deep condish for the remedy. I'm sure those who have Elasta's DPR-11 in their arsenal, know how hard it is to find #1 and #2 the formula has recently been changed to a more liquidy version which those who have tried it have said it is not as effective as the previous buttercreme frosting thickness. I happen to find a supplier in TX who still has some of the old version, so I ordered 4 jars from. In rotation, they should last me until next year. I will sometimes mix my trusty camellia oil in with it, but today I just used straight from the jar, added a bit of warm water to lather a bit and slapped on my plastic cap. Too hot in here for steam tonight, so I'm under my heat cap and then I will scarf it, sleep and rinse it out in the am. I'm sure my tresses will be happy come morning!!

Got Denman Brushes!!

So far with my natural hair I've only been coming while wet in the shower and distributing product /combing/styling with my hands. I have been reading off and on for a while now about the pros and cons of The Denman, and since my hair is getting a bit longer, I'm looking for alternate ways to distribute product and smooth and detangle. I ended up getting the small (D1431) - 5 rows of bristles and the Large (D41) - 9 rows of bristles. I tried the large first and definitely is for longer hair, shoulder and beyond use. So I put in the closet for future. :-). The smaller brush works well with smoothing and distributing product, but I also noticed it flattened my hair into waves with curl on the bottom. I had to "refluff and scrunch" to get back a more curly look. I do like it, but I will use occasionally...not every day and only after hair is already detangled when I get out of the shower.

The Hotness!! Victoria's Secret Marled Sweater Dress

I really liked the styling of this cute sweater dress and since my office runs on the colder side, it seemed like a good choice to rotate in. I got it a couple of weeks back and have yet to wear it. One reason is it is considerably lower cut on me than on the model, showing lotta cleavage...so no can do for the office. LOL! It also is a little on the itchy side, so a slip underneath is also a must. Overall though, it's pretty cute and I will sport with my knee-high brown boots and a retro 70's type necklace. Deep Condish Fridays

I typically will deep condish on a Friday night, plastic cap, sleep and rinse out Saturday morning. As I love to play around with mixtures and try different things together, Friday nights are usually a good time to relax and give myself a well deserved weeks end treatment. This time I used for the first time Aubrey's Honeysuckle Rose Moisturising Conditioner mixed with a warmed dose of my favorite oil, Camellia, that I steeped in rose petals, fresh organic rosemary, nettles and hibiscus flowers. Mixed up well and slapped on well rinsed, wet hair and then 30 minutes under the steamer while watching the movie, "Twilight" (eegh-was alright, was expecting a little more).

So, this morning I will rinse and style and enjoy a great hair day!

I think these two photos speak volumes about what getting off the creamy crack, taking care of yourself and your hair can accomplish in 6 months. The first photo was taken 4/18/2009 and the second today, 10/28/2009. It doesn't even look like the same head of hair, does it? And on 6/20/2009 I got the relaxed ends you still see in the 4/18/2009 photo cut off at Devachan in NYC. It was pretty short and I still got amazing growth and thickness just since June!! I attribute healthy eating, my supplements and incorporating henna and other herb/rinses to my treatments. I also quit shampoo!! I only wash with conditioner and do a very seldom melted, watered down, all natural/vegan shampoo bar wash. I deep condish at least once a week but now in the winter I've stepped it up to twice a week and it has helped keep the dryness at bay. I'll be posting the comparison and length checks quarterly and am excited to see what 2010 will bring!

Definitely liked this conditioner! Will use again. Only problem is the very strong perfumey smell, but I can live with it. I did 30 mins under the steamer, plastic capped it and rinsed out this morning. Left me with silky smooth, strong feeling, substantial tresses. Walked my son to school in the windy rain earlier with wet hair, so got a bit wind blown, but overall I think it came out okay.

This is one of the reasons I love those little thrift shops that dot the streets of non-descript towns in NJ. I was at an appointment in one of these little towns and next door to where I went was a rough and tumble looking everything in it thrift shop. I always will pop in and take a quick dash through in case there might be a VanGogh or a real diamond heirloom mistaken for a fake lurking about somewhere. Not so lucky that day, but I did find this really cute authentic Kate Spade soft fur clutch. It clearly had never been used, so perhaps someone received as a gift and didn't like it or had buyers remorse. I snapped it up and although it's not a typical "day" bag, it definitely will go nice with dinner out or weekend outing.

Esty.com has struck again! Or I should say I have struck Esty.com again..LOL! They have hit upon the perfect marketing formula for shopping addicts like myself. :-). They send a "spotlight" email of 10-15 items in a nice little newsletter type format to entice you to go and look at the shops. Brilliant!! Another vest from this shop was in the hightlights newsletter, but when clicked over, I discovered someone with quicker click capabilities had beat me to it! The next item on the list was this one and at $30.00 was a steal so I snatched it up! I noticed the seller, who runs a quaint vintage on-line shop on Etsy.com, has a blog as well so I clicked over and gave it a read. I've been following The Morrocco Method's Chart for the year and I definitely will give thumbs up to it! Hey, every little bit helps. :-) The next set of "Best Days" will be December 3-5, which are the best days to cut for growth. See chart for other dates for thickness, styling, etc.

The Lunar Chart displays the 5 optimal dates each month for cutting and beautifying hair. Certain days are especially beneficial for a certain task and are noted on the calendar in red. In addition, there are dates each season of particular importance.

In my never ending search for the arsenal of killer deep conditioners, this one caught my eye last night after picking up and reading several labels, sampling consistencies and smelling, I picked this one up. Biolage is renowed for its unique fusion of Matrix science and customized botanicals that rejuvenate hair naturally.

The label says it's paraben and silicone-free as well as an intense nourishing and restorative treatment. I will try this one tomorrow night with 20-30 mins under my steamer, plastic cap it and rinse out the next day. Will get back to you on results and pics on Tuesday!

Fenugreek/Methi Powder

On the advice on one of my Indian co-workers and some articles I came across on the interwebs, about a month ago I stocked up on Fenugreek/Methi powder and added it to my monthly henna treatment along with amla, which helps to keep my curls from stretching out too much and remain springy. Fenugreek is a GREAT addition to my herbal treatment arsenal. It provides smoothness, clumping and SHINE!!

Yesterday I while browsing teas, I saw it in a prepackaged tea bag form, and a picked up a box to make a tea rinse and a liquid to mix with my Fenugreek "root treatment". I mixed a cup of Alma powder with enough Fenugreek tea mixture to make a cake batter consistency and then added 2 tablespoons or so of Organic Camellia Oil. Camellia Oil is my go-to oil as it's not too heavy for my hair or skin ( I rub it on after shower on damp skin as well.)

I pour a 1/2 cup of warm water to the root mixture I let sit on my head under a plastic cap for 2 hours or so, lather it up root to tip and rinse it out, following with a co-wash, rinse again, then fenugreek tea rinse, Tresseme moisure conditioner as my leave in, style and seal with a fingerful of Jessicurl Deep Conditioner and Aloe Butter. Twirl sections around my finger and all done!!

Winter Proofing My Hair, Skin, Sinuses and Eyes!

My apartment is hella hot and I have no control over my heat (it's free though..lol) so I usually will have windows open somewhere in here at any given time. I don't like heat when I'm trying to sleep, it's very disruptive. I've been using my warm mist cheapo Vicks humidifier on the table next to my bed, but it adds to the heat issue. I finally broke down and did a search on google to read reviews and find a large cool mist humidifier to quench my parched self.

I finally decided on Air-O-Swiss 7145 Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifiers- Deluxe Package. The deluxe package includes 2 silver ionic sticks and 3 demineralization cartridges. The keep to proper usage of these things is to keep them CLEAN and replace the necessary parts as needed. Base on the reviews, I hope to alleviate the desert dryness and add lots of great moisure back in the air.
